Trip Itinerary

3 Days of the most spectacular wilderness Class V rafting in the Country

The Forks is remote, exciting, unpredictable, and extremely beautiful – arguably the greatest class V wilderness trip in the country.  It also does not run every year, and when it does run, getting it at the right flows can be tricky. Because of its remoteness, there are unique logistical challenges (mules!) that are very much part of running the Forks (and we want guests to be a part of). And, For some it will require some time and effort to get physically ready for the trips.

Because of all of this, our standard itinerary is 3-days, allowing for time to unwind, explore, scout and pick our way through the whitewater, and truly experience one of the country’s most spectacular river canyons. The Forks is not a place people want to rush through.

Notes:
– Please read our ‘Is a Forks for You” page before considering this trip.
– These trips take place in the wonderfully unpredictable natural environment. Because of this our itineraries are always flexible to accommodate water levels, weather, and our guest’s needs and interests. We also do custom itineraries – including a 2-day option for charter groups. If you are on a custom trip it may be different from the ones below.

Day 1:

Arrive early at our River Center near Kernville California. The head guide will give out dry bags and help people pack. We will then head to the trailhead high above the canyon. There we will do a short calisthenic warm up to make sure everyone is ready before beginning the 2-mile hike into the canyon. Each guest will carry their own dry bag, life jacket, helmet, wetsuit, and paddle (note: we provide this gear). The hike in is beautiful and on most trips we will see the Mule Train that brings our rafts and food into the canyon heading back up the trail. This is a great time to give them an apple!

Once we get to the river we will meet the rest of the guides and have lunch as they finish rigging. We will then do a short swim test and get on the water. How far we go the first day depends on water levels, weather, and the mules – but the Forks starts with a bang – there will be class V (and a ton of class IV) every day.

That afternoon we will stop for the first night in the Canyon. This is very much an expedition style trip with extreme weight and bulk limits for our gear. But we still do the camping with our style and attention to detail – with comfortable lightweight camping gear (provided) and creative menus.

Day 2:

After coffee and a big breakfast (and maybe a second cup of coffee) we pack up and head back on the river. There will be more class V (and almost non stop class 4) and chances to hike and explore.

In the afternoon we will pull into another riverside camp for the night. There are very few people who get to experience two nights in this spectacular canyon.

Day 3:

Our last day on the Forks is a big one! Some of the biggest whitewater of the trip (sometimes including 2 or 3 portages) before floating back into civilization and the last short stretch of class IV. We end up back at the river center in early to late afternoon.
